During my 11 years in the grain and cereals industry, I realised the role played by smallholder farmers, but the outcome they get from farming is not near the effort they invest. I founded Agri Farmer Centre as a social enterprise to realise the role played by smallholder farmers. However, the outcome of buying maize and beans from these vulnerable farmers was achieved by contracting their cooperatives or associations as my suppliers. I was offering them a price that was 10% better than what the market was offering, and I still made my margins. I started with three women's cooperatives in the eastern province of Rwanda, and now I have nine contracted cooperatives that cover 34% of our raw material supply. AGRIFACE recognises the importance of having healthier suppliers, which is why we sell back both fortified maize meal and porridge flour to our farmers at a discounted price (4-7%). We want to build an inclusive business to compete with other actors in the EAC market.
