Empowering Smallholder Farmers through Grain Solutions since 2017

During my 11 years in the grain and cereals industry, I realized that smallholder farmers' role in the food systems isn't compansated. I founded Agri Farmer Centre as a social enterprise to recognize what smallholder farmers deserve. We achieved the outcome of purchasing maize and beans from these vulnerable farmers by contracting their cooperatives or associations as our suppliers. We were offering them a price that was 10% better than what the market was offering, and we still recorded our margins. We started with three women's cooperatives in the Eastern province of Rwanda, and now we have nine contracted cooperatives that cover 44% of our raw material supply. AGRIFACE recognizes the importance of having healthier suppliers, which is why we sell back both fortified maize meal and porridge flour to them at a discounted price (4-7%). We want to build an inclusive business to compete with other actors in the EAC market.
